Seoul
Contrast lies at the heart of Seoul and has given the Korean capital its distinctive character. Where else can one find a city of skyscrapers, walled in by 14th century gates? In the city’s center are mountains of granite, bordered by the Hans River. New age and the old world mix as technology plays a larger role among the youth, while old school merchants and fortunetellers still earn their keep on the busy streets. There are still communities made up of traditional cottages, although the construction of apartment-style residences has gone up to a feverish pace.
Travelers wanting a sense of Seoul’s history can find it in the city’s numerous museums and palaces. Those out for new fashion and bargains have sprawling malls and street market as alternative destinations. Food is likewise diverse — from succulent ribs to satisfying vegetarian cuisine. There are entertainment options for all tastes, as well as an active nightlife for those wishing to unwind after a hectic day at work or sightseeing.
Seoul’s past is best encapsulated by the palaces and historical centers of the city. The Gyeongbok Palace, for one, is fairy tale-like, picturesque, and idyllic. It is also the oldest and biggest palace in Seoul. Biwon or the Secret Garden is another example of a historical sight – this time, a recreation garden for Korea’s royalty. Prior to any of these, visiting the Seoul Museum of History is a must, especially for first-time travelers to Seoul. The museum has a notable collection of artifacts and memorabilia, and technologically enhanced presentations have been added focusing on several key historical locations in Seoul.
American travelers only need a valid passport for trips to Seoul that are for a maximum of 30 days. A visa is required after that period. Tourists of other nationalities may also be required a visa when visiting the capital. There are no common travel hassles, although some female travelers have experienced a few instances of harassment at night. A companion is ideal when going out at night in certain areas. Spring (from April to June) is the best time to visit Seoul.
